This is the two winning x-mas cards, in the KRADS x-mas card competition 2008 - congratulation to Kennet and Kristoffer and MERRY X-MAS to all of you.

KRADS GETS "HONORABLE MENTION"

KRADS is awarded "honorable mention" in the competition "Nyt liv i bykirken".  We participated  at a crowded award ceremony at Gethsemane Church wednesday afternoon.  

EXTRACT FROM THE COMPETITION TEXT.

THE CHURCH WITHIN THE CITY & THE CITY WITHIN THE CHURCH
The city church is evolving - not under closure... The future offers a strong relation between the cityscape and the internal space of the church. The activity and life within the church should reflect the surrounding society. The church will contribute to the multiplicity and balance of society in a positive manner. The contribution is based on the idea of openness and the basic compassionate values and principles of the church. The space and function of the church is not under closure but is evolving in sync with it’s surroundings.

A focus on open-mindedness, humanity within the church and the dynamics and diversity of the city, will position the modern city church as a cultural hub and again include it in the social and cultural awareness of the citizens. The city church is a historically founded asset in the future evolution of the city.

Based on the qualities of the city and the church, future relations between Lithauns Square and Gethsemane Church will blossom. Lithauns Square, partly sport grounds and partly a park, has direct physical relations to the nearby elementary school and recreation center. Lithauns Square is bussing with activity and reflects the diversity of Vesterbro.

Gethsemane Church is situated just next to Lithauns Square. The physical and mental boundary between church and square can nevertheless seem difficult to overcome. If the boundaries are overcome a new field of possibilities emerges and relations between city and church will blossom and the two will nourish each other.

KRADS AT A ROUNDTABLE TALK AT LYNFABRIKKEN

KRADS (Mads) participated in a "ROUND TABLE" talk//workshop at LYNFABRIKKEN last thursday. The subject was the public urban space of Aarhus and how to activate it more. At the table were, amongst others,  Fidel and Emilio from the great design studio WALKING - CHAIR based in Vienna  -  and of course Lasse and Jeppe from LYNFABRIKKEN. We at KRADS like to thank LYNFABRIKKEN for a great and intense evening.

KRADS PARTICIPATES IN NUNORDISK RAP BATTLE

Tonight, december 3rd, Krads will be among 7 young architectural offices from the nordic countries - presenting their projects, ideas and ambitions - at the NuNordisk RapBattle. The presentations, followed by discussions, will take place at the DogA in Oslo, Norway.

THE PERFECT HOLE - MÅLØV NETWORK COMPETITION

KRADS participated in the project competition "MÅLØV AKSEN" in Denmark after getting pre-qualified with SLA landscape architects, SLETH MODERNISM, Oluf Jørgensen Engineers. We were one team amongst five who was pre-qualified. We are sorry to say that our team did not win the competition, the winning team was the great architects of ADEPT and LiW Planning.

Our propocal was to create the perfect hole for movement / flow next to the metro station. This would be one in a sequence of four new urban spaces in what could become the new Måløv Aksis. The hole would be covered in asphalt in a flow based organic shape, with white mega graphics of thermal plast. The tree other spaces in the sequence would be the city parkingPARK, the SHOPPINGstreet and the urbanFORREST.

KAUPTÚN - SHOPPING CENTRE

A couple of shots taken at the building site yesterday.  Things are progressing - and starting to take shape.

OUR PROPOSAL FOR THE CHICAGO UNION STATION 2020 COMPETITION

Chicago is renowned for its number of public parks, famous for giving birth to the world’s first skyscraper and recognized as a metropolis that in its structure masters the choreography of urban movement.

This proposal is a loving tribute to the inherent qualities of the city and it’s history. The new dynamic center has two key components; the Union Plaza and the Vertical City. A vibrating metropolitan plaza, celebrating the dynamics of the transit’s constant state of flux, and a reinvention of the skyscraper through a site specific structure - incorporating the diverse characteristics of Chicago.

In respect of Union Station, the historic building is kept almost entirely in its original form with its importance enhanced by the new adjacent Union Plaza. The Grand Hall is given a new life as a connection point between the West Loop Transportation Center and the HSR-platforms. The perforated plaza, above the platforms, is conceived as a vibrating urban juncture between horizontal and vertical movements – between the underlying flow of high speed trains, the Chicago river and the stream of people traveling through the vertical city.

Elevated above the plaza, the Vertical City can be viewed as a condensed sampling of the unique urban fabric of Chicago – a slice of the city that has been rotated 90 degrees. A collection of “horizontal” skyscrapers - each with their individual program and identity; streets, sidewalks and parks, stacked on top of each other. Programmatically tipping our hat to Burnham & Bennets’s Plan of Chicago, a vertical chain of public parks and recreational areas is introduced throughout the structure.

The proposal’s ambition is to create a strong landmark for Chicago, rooted in the city’s genus loci, and at the same time challenge the traditional typology of plinths and towers.

Knives cutting and foam flying in the pursuit of our next project.  We use the model for sketching and testing new ideas and for final presentation.

"BYOASE" A NEW DEVELOPMENT IN HERNING WITH C.C. CONTRACTOR AND THE CITY OF HERNING

KRADS, C.C. Contractor and the dept. of city planning of Herning creates this visionary scheme for a whole new urban area in the center of Herning. 

The site is surrounded by Dronningens Boulevard, Fredensgade, Dalgas Allé and Lykkesvej.

It´s called an URBAN OASIS (BYOASE) and is a combined transformation of the old power plant in the city and a scheme of a new development of 30.000 + sqm.

The focus of the project is the diverse identity of a post industrial area and its buildings being transformed in synergy with a whole new development. The concept is to let the new structure frame the site and its old buildings - generating a intense athmosphere of dynamics and diversity. This is going to be a place for living, working, leisure, culture and recreation.

The project was pre-approved by the politicians of Herning last month. Today it´s being published in the Danish media. This marks the beginning of the futher development of the project. During the next 12 month the city of Herning will work on the local planning.

THE SUMMERHOUSE ON THE ISLAND SAMSØ HAS BEEN UNDERGOING SOME CHANGES THE LAST YEAR. NOW THE BUILDING FITS THE DEMANDS OF THE LANDSCAPE AND CLIENT PERFECT.

FAREWELL

Last week we turned in yet another competiton proposal at the DK office. Our new interns Grimur & Buddi did a fantastic job working with us on the basic concept and idea and showed great stamina in the final stages before deadline.

THE GALTEN DOWNTOWN PROJECT

PARFAR DEVELOPMENT

We have been working on the double house PARFAR in a 1/50 scale model. Resulting in a motive of two overlapping volumes, each with their own characteristics clearly distinctive from both the outside as well from the inside. Here are some pics....

VILLA CHESS IS LOOKING FINE

In the same street as Villa View we got VILLA CHESS which also got windows and sliding doors put in yesterday and it looks really nice. Now this building is getting it´s final look, the huge doors are very smooth and the view is fantastic.

VILLA VIEW IS TAKEN SHAPE

This week Villa View really got into shape as the windows came in. The client had the first BBQ in his house together with us and all the builders involved. Congratulation from KRADS.

GALTEN DOWNTOWN

This weeks edition of Galten Folkeblad reveals the first sketches for a new projekt in downtown Galten. The projekt is a collaboration between KRADS ARCHITECTURE and Mikkelsen+ and features shopping and a restaurant.

BLACK & WHITE TWINS....

Like the ones from Germany these twins have been under construction for the past 9 months. The black & white "Twin-Villa's", located on the outskirts of Reykjavík, were designed for two brothers and are expected to be finished within a couple of months.
