ARTICLE FROM "Politiken" ON THE SOCIOLOGIC DEVELOPMENT OF BIG CITIES

Considering the circumstances of which VAERKSTED came to be, I thought this article (published in POLITIKEN on saturday november 17, 2007) was sheding some light on the tendecies in the present urban development, and especially the movement between megacities and large cities.

It describes how the cities that have been existing in the shadow of the succes of megacities, are now experiencing a shift of focus from the general public. The main reason is that these cities have been competing with megacities, during the revolution of the information society. The megacities had the advantage in numbers of inhabitants, and other cities were left in the wake to become demobilized as remains of a former era, the industrialization. But wat has happend is, a new economical and social power has appeared. The demands of the creative people was forgotten in the megacities, which were typically planned to satisfy the general population. The new creative class, who were to define the character of a new society, had a need to inflict their vision, on the city in which they were to live and work. And at the time of the shift, the economy of creative people depended on succes, thereby only allowing a few percentage of these people to have a business. This was mainly due to the high prices of residential and office space in the megacities. What the megacities could not provide, was a frame work where the content were yet to be applied. This frame work was the large, volumious structures from the industrial era. The new "creative cities" now had something to offer. And because it is in the nature of the creative mind to, do new things, that does not depend on anybody having done it before, the cities which have attracted these people, now consists of great varieties of urbanity, and are becomming the new centers of focus from the outside world.
This put in to an Aarhus context, is for me quite relevant. The article talks about these tendencies in a very large scale, from megacity to large cities, but it really is a tendency which can be seen in all urban contexts. In Aarhus, as in many other cities of the same scale, there has been an explosion in real estate prizes, which makes it hard for new creative businesses, without a lot of capital, to get of to a good start. But anyway the tendency has been a reluctancy to move out of the city center, because of insecurity about lack of attention, even though the economical advantages has been obvious for a long time.

I see the establishment of studios like VAERKSTED, offices like PLUMROSE and galleries like MOGADISHNI as the first step towards a creative decentralization of Aarhus.

The fascinating illustrations from the book "Reclaiming the American West" (Princeton Architectural Press 2002), at once made Alan Berger known outside North America. They show reclamation-projects in a grand, but for most unknown american landscape, scared by the exploitation of the ground for raw materials.
Alan Berger is a professor in landscape architecture at Harvard Graduate School of Design, where he is the founder ansd director of P-REX (the Harvard Design School Project for Reclamation Excellence), who perform research as well design tasks in the field of landscape architecture. With his latest release "Drosscape: Wasting Land in Urban America" (Princeton Architectural Press 2006), he is yet again expanding his field of operation and shifting focus towards the de-industrialised areas and the rapid, horizontal, urbanizition, which we also recognize form a european context.
The works of AlanBergers are published in a number of renowned magazines such as AA Files, Landscape Journal, Praxis and others. Before Harvard Berger was an associate professor at University of Colorado and has taught and lectured at several univerities in the US and Europe.

Alan Berger is a guest professor at the Institute of Urban Planning and Landscape this semester.

KRADS STUDYTRIP TO VIENNA 2007

Because of EUROPAN 09 we took a trip to Austria for checking out the site. We also checked out some super nice Austrian Architecture. We off course learned about the history of Vienna and enjoyed the clubs, bars and restaurants.

LANDSBANKINN HQ - COMPETITION

We have been pre-qualified to participate in a competition for the new Headquarters of the bank Landsbanki in Reykjavík. We have teamed up with aart a/s and LIW Planning and are looking forward to work with them on this project. This is a two phase competition and the first phase is planned to be finished in the beginning of December. The competition site is in the heart of the Reykjavík city center and will be facing Reykjavík's future Concert house that is now under construction.

SECOND PRIZE IN REYKJAVÍK CITY CENTER

KRADS ARCHITECTURE has been announced second prize winner in the KVOSIN competition for Reykjavik city center. It is a shared second prize with Gehl Architects as the other winning office. The city has suggested to buy elements from our proposal, and Gehl Architects, as an input to the winning office Studio Granda. Their proposal is going to be developed into the future local plan for the area. Concerning our project the city has shown special interest in the way we suggest solving the Lækjartorg (square) in front of the burned down historical buildings.

KRADS INTERVIEW ON P4 ØSTJYLLAND

KRADS did an interview with Ib Skov from the lokal radio station P4 Østjylland today, about the project we did for the Århus Festival. In the interview Kristjan and Palle describes the project and its intention, and participates in a dialog with shop owners from the area. One who is very happy about the occupation of the parking lot, and another who is totally unsympathic about the project.

RECLAIM THE STREETS

During the Århus Festival, KRADS architecture will put the cars role in the center of Århus in focus. Traffic in Århus has increased. Parking lots occupy a great deal of the central city spaces in the city. Shopping streets that exists for (in symbiosis with) the pedestrian, can not utilize their full potential because of a steady current of cars, forcing people up against the walls. What if your parking lot were occupied by a small patch of recreational urban space? Would you be annoyed and irritated? Or would the thought, that your car could be occupying a valuable piece of urban space, cross your mind.

VILLA CHESS IS RISING

The concrete work is shooting up at Villa Chess, the weather conditions in Iceland are perfect at the moment so things are happening fast.

WE HAVE BEEN PRE-QUALIFIED TO PARTICIPATE IN A COMPETITION ABOUT THE CENTER OF REYKJAVÍK

Last April there was a big fire in the center of Reykjavík where some historical buildings burned down. The city has a competition for rebuilding the area, including a general manicure for the city center. Six architecture offices have been pre-qualified to make the competition for commission. We were lucky to be one of these six offices, the other ones are : Studio Granda + Argos + Gullinsnið, VA Architects + Landslag ehf, Henning Larsen Architects, Arkitema + Arkþing, Gehl Architects.
